Chapter 17

American Embassy

Dag Hammarskjölds väg 31

115 27 Stockholm, Sweden

June 17, 2009/0447 Zulu

Alex was led to the secure communications room of the American embassy in Stockholm. Izzy was outside working on a problem with her passport, at least that was the cover they used to get inside the more secure areas of the embassy. Alex took a seat in front of a computer that had been set up for him. Within a few clicks of the mouse he was looking at Rock in San Antonio.

“What’s up, Doc?” he asked with his Bronx accent and a grin. Alex fell back into the chair, laughing. “How’s Stockholm? What did you find out?”

“We found something unusual, Rock. I’m not sure what it is. We’ll start working on it today,” Alex said.

“By unusual you mean?” Rock asked.

“It looks like our little bug, but it’s not our little bug. I don’t know for sure but I think it’s mutating or has been mutated. I won’t know for sure until I have some more tests run,” Alex said.

“Okay, what about the other stuff that was inside that place?” Rock asked.

“So far, it’s the usual stuff, anthrax, small pox, plus our little bug and combinations of all sorts of nasty things. I’ve got to wait for MI-6 to identify most of that stuff at the level-four lab,” Alex said.

“Get back to me as soon as you know something, understood?” Rock asked.

“Yes, Skipper, I understand,” Alex said.

Alex ended the conference and found Isabel in an office waiting. They returned to the ECDC and Alex went to work on his theory that he’d developed from the stem cells he’d harvested and Izzy returned to running the test he needed done. A few minutes later Isabel found Alex.

“Come with me,” she said shortly.

“What’s up, Iz?” he asked with a frown.

“My two is missing,” Izzy said.

She looked worried and scared. What the hell was she trying—Oh shit! Alex got up and looked at Isabel in alarm because he guessed what she was saying without saying it. The sample of the mutated pathogen had gone missing. Few people had access to the area where he and Isabel were working, and the area had been designated top secret. Alex and Isabel along with a team of scientists from MI-6 were the only real personnel that occupied the labs.

“Now will you come with me?” Isabel asked.

“I will,” Alex said, securing his space.

They walked to the lab where Isabel worked and Izzy led him to the containers where the pathogens were being stored.

“I put it right there last night,” Isabel said, indicating an empty space inside the container. She started to open the case.

“Don’t touch anything, angel.”

Alex looked around the container and mentally ticked off the things he needed to check. Access to the room that had been breached was at the top of his list. Since he and Isabel were more or less guests at the lab, he sought out his primary MI-6 counterpart and they started combing the access logs and found someone had entered the lab around three in the morning, leaving within ten minutes.
